Sony Interactive Entertainment America (SIE) has announced that it will not be renewing the PlayStation 4’s license agreement after the current console’s fifth year. This decision comes as a surprise to many, as PS4 has been one of the console’s most popular platforms. While there are a few possible reasons for this decision, SIE’s reasoning seems to be that the platform is no longer meeting their needs. They cite “the increasing popularity of other platforms” and “the increasing competition from other gaming companies.” This isn’t the first time Sony has made this type of decision; they have also pulled the plug on PlayStation Vita and Xbox One licenses in the past. While it is sad to see such a popular console go out of business, it is also likely that Sony will continue to make changes to their console lineup in order to keep up with competition.
