If you have a dermal piercing, it is important to clean it regularly. Cleaning the piercing can help prevent infection and keep the piercing looking its best. To clean a dermal piercing, follow these steps:

  1. Remove any jewelry that is not needed. Remove any foreign material, such as dirt and skin cells, with a mild soap and water solution. Rinse the Piercing thoroughly with warm water and soap. Be sure to dry the Piercing thoroughly before putting back on jewelry.
  2. Apply an antibiotic ointment to your skin before cleaning the Piercing. Apply the ointment to your skin in areas where you will be cleaning the Piercing (eastern side of ear, under chin, etc.). Let it work for at least 30 minutes before putting on new jewelry or returning to activity. If you are using aDermal piercer cleaner (available at most health food stores), follow directions on the package carefully; do not use harsh chemicals or alcohols in this process!
