If your home’s plumbing is clogged and you can’t seem to clear the blockage, don’t panic. There are a few tried and true methods for cleaning blocked downpipes. The first step is to identify the source of the blockage. If it’s coming from a sink, bathtub, or shower, look for soap scum or build-up on the sides and bottom of the drain. If it’s coming from a water main, look for chunks of debris or rust on the outside of the pipe. Once you know where the blockage is, try one of these methods:
- Pour boiling water down the drain to loosen any debris. Use a plunger to suction onto any objects that have lodged in the pipe and pull them out. Be careful not to burn yourself!
- Use a snake to clear blockages in larger pipes. Wrap the snake around the obstruction and pull until it reaches the end of the pipe. Then use your hands to remove any objects that have become caught on the snake’s teeth.
- Clear blockages using an auger—a long metal tube with sharp edges that can be inserted into pipes to break up clumps of dirt or debris. Be sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear when using an auger; it can be dangerous if pieces fly off into your eyes. ..
