There are a few things you can do to make a gradient in Illustrator more interesting and realistic. One is to use a layer mask. This will create a gradient that is only visible on the layer that it is applied to. Another way to make gradients is to use the Gradient tool, but instead of using the default colors, use one of your own colors as the starting point and then add other colors as you go.
