If you’re like most Xbox 360 owners, you’ve probably gone through the hassle of buying a new controller only to find out that the battery pack is missing. If you’re like me, you might have been tempted to just tough it out and hope for the best. But if your controller isn’t working properly, there’s no point in trying to play your favorite games. Here’s how to make your Xbox 360 controller work without a battery pack:

  1. Remove the battery cover by gently pressing down on one side and then pulling it off.
  2. Remove the four screws that hold the PCB board in place (two on each side). Be careful not to lose any of the screws!
  3. Carefully remove the PCB board from the controller body. You may need to use a Phillips head screwdriver to pry it loose from around the edges of the buttons and triggers. Once it’s free, be sure to save it so you can replace it later if necessary.
  4. Replace the PCB board with a compatible replacement from your local hardware store or online retailer (note that some controllers require different types of boards). Be sure to match up all of the screw holes on both boards before re-installing them into the controller body. ..
