If you’re ever stuck in an automatic gate, there’s one simple way to open it without a car: just push the button. But if you don’t have a key, or if the gate is locked from the inside, there are other ways to open it. Here are three tips:

  1. Look for a handle on the side of the gate. Sometimes there’s a small hole in the top that you can fit your hand through, and then use your other hand to pull on the handle. If the handle is tight against the gate wall, it’s probably locked from the inside.
  2. Use a plunger or vacuum cleaner to suck out any trapped air pockets. This will usually free up the gate so you can open it easily.
  3. Use a hammer and chisel (or even your hands) to pry open any stubborn screws or nails that hold down the door frame and door hinges.
